Not everyone can be a marketing expert

I never cease to be amazed by the "advice" about marketing that I get from sales, the product development, and other non-marketing team members. It usually nvolves suggesting endless eMail blasts. My advice back to them is to not confuse tactics with strategy. Marketing is both a science and an art; It's not just about sending eMails. Sometimes sending an eMail may not even be the right marketing tactic.

Marketers works best when they work within a strategy,

So what "advice" do marketers actually need. They need the team to share their knowledge of the customer, the product, and competitors. A good marketing team works with others in the organization to uncover the value to the customer and what makes the company, product, or solution different. Marketers deliver the best results, when there is a strategy built by gathering critical information from the product team, customers, sales team, industry analysts, and customers. Marketers need to understand the challenges, trends, solutions, customer feedback, and business objectives to ensure the best return on marketing investment.  Only then can the marketing team works its magical mix of science and artistry to create a story and strategy that picks the best tactics and channels for attributable conversions that lead to sales and customer evangelism.

A great marketer makes it looks easy, but a lot goes into creating and implementing a strong marketing program. Some of the important marketing elements include:

  • Data driven decision making and strategy

  • Persona identification and content mapping along the buyer journey

  • Digital marketing strategy fusing impactful content optimized for search and accessible via multiple digital channels

  • Continuous measurement of conversions and achieved revenue goals via analytics, customer and team feedback, and market changes

As marketers, we value everyone's contribution. We just would like to stop fighting about eMail blasts. :)
